About The Synergy Project

The Synergy Project provides technical assistance and services to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to design, evaluate, and coordinate HIV/AIDS programs and identify and disseminate lessons learned from these programs. In April 1999, USAID awarded The Synergy Project to the former TvT Associates, Inc. (now Global Health and Development Strategies, a division of Social & Scientific Systems, Inc.) and its subcontractor, the University of Washington.
About Global Health and Development Strategies
Global Health and Development Strategies (GHDS) has provided technical and advisory services to public health programs in more than 60 countries. GHDS supports solid planning and evidence-based decision-making in the following technical areas:

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Maternal and child health
  • Family planning and reproductive health
  • Integrated population, health, and nutrition programs
  • Health financing
  • Infectious diseases
  • Environmental health
  • Health policy and systems reform
In recent years, GHDS has focused on enhancing the international response to HIV/AIDS by providing expertise in:

  • Situational assessment, strategic planning, and program design
  • Program monitoring and evaluation
  • Collection, analysis, synthesis, and dissemination of best practices and lessons learned

About Social & Scientific Systems, Inc.

About the University of Washington
The University of Washington (UW), one of the leading research universities in the United States, has a strong tradition of research, prevention, and training in the field of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases (STD). AIDS and STD research, training, clinical programs, and international technical assistance activities are coordinated by UW’s Center for AIDS and STD (CFAS), established in 1988 and under the direction of King K. Holmes, MD, PhD. CFAS is now the largest clinical training program for AIDS and STD in the world. CFAS provides a framework for 18 core programs, including the Center for Health Education and Research (CHER). CHER administers CFAS projects, both domestic and international, which focus on social and behavioral research, professional training, strategic planning, instructional design, evaluation, health communication, and applied public health practice related to HIV/AIDS and STD. Ann Downer, EdD, is the CHER Executive Director and leads the Synergy team at UW.
